AN ODE TO LIFE

LE COEUR VEUT CE QU’IL VEUT

It was not an age like ours!

She was 21, a beauty but single, hence, not qualified for the “Lucky Girls” crew. She had it all but not a man and to her generation, that was most important. Before she clocked 22, she met him. Tall, handsome and with a caramel coated skin. All she ever wished for was right in front of her asking for her hand in marriage. Her parents were friends with his parents. Of course, in a New York time, the union was stamped and sealed by her parents. It was right to go ahead with the marriage plan, asides the parents’ blessings, this was a great opportunity to shield herself from the societal pressure. Staring into his dreamy brown eyes and listening to his polished English as he speaks of his London experience, she thought; “Is this what I want?”  Something was not just right. She knew it but could not figure it out.

Just like the heart wants what the heart wants, the heart also knows what the heart  wants and what the heart does not want.

Her heart doesn’t want him.

“You’ve made your choice, it is your problem now, don’t say you were not warned” her father said. Her mother added; “It is obvious, you want to grow old in your father’s compound.”

Time waits for no man or man waits for no woman, he got married to another damsel. Everyone believed that she has missed out of a lifetime opportunity. It was funny because she never regretted it.

For Eight years, all she heard was her mother’s words to her. It might just be coming to past. She was a real life instance to every girl who said no to a suitor. It was not a good one to be known with but whatever she did was for a good reason which she was solely aware of.

At 29, with academic qualification and a teaching job, she met another, handsome but not tall, smart and the best part was that he was the man after her heart. They exchanged vows and was confirmed man and wife.

Thirty years of marriage and still counting.

Chill joor! The best part of the story is here!!

After thirty eight years, it was obvious that she made the right choice. The first suitor, the “supposed” man of her dream has dissolved his marriage. Or rather, his wife flaunted her running skills, who wouldn’t run for her life? She flew back to her parents, with reports that he panel beats her. Also, he was and is a drug addict!

“Truly successful decision-making relies on a balance between deliberate and instinctive thinking”. – Malcolm Gladwell

The Dame WANTED all the physical features he has, but she was also aware that she NEEDED more than that. Hence, she acted!

Differentiating right from wrong is not the problem or maybe we make that mistake two, three times but the constant challenge is letting our WANTS supersede our NEEDS.

Remember, you are the Ultimate Decision Maker.

THE BEAUTY OF ROUGE

My love for colours has not dwindled, maybe NEVER. I mean, a rooted love like ours (colours and I), cannot just fade. There’s something about colours, it is not only the beauty but I believe it comes with certain vibes. Okay! I am not a psychologist, so I may not have proofs but avant de tomber amoureuse avec Colours, Chidi and I would wear clothes which colours suit our moods. Colours defined our emotions. So, you can imagine our very happy moments.

More like a colour festival, yellow + pink + brown + purple + black!!

I would have shared a picture but I prefer words. This is because I am vying for the post of World’s Hottest Grandma 2040, I wouldn’t want the mistake of a Blast From The Past!!

The warning light, danger sign and blood are RED. Hence, I was uncomfortable wearing red. With this alone, I doubt if I would make it to the Law School, it was unquestionably a bad judgement.

The many shades of red has recently placed me in a more confused state than the ultimate search of my earrings’ hook. Burgundy, Carmine, Tomato, Maroon, Rose, Scarlet, Cherry, Merlot, Sangria, Ruby… biko chelu!!

It could be a manifestation of maturity or just realisation of my misjudgment.  Nevertheless, I have come to understand that Red indicates warning or danger because it is a strong colour that easily alerts people. It also symbolises Joyful celebrations (how can I forget Christmas), Passion (really? Are you thinking of Telemundo?), Courage and Power.

A touch of red proves the strength it wields. No wonder most brides cannot do without it. Be it as the colour of a lipstick or accessories, it awakens the soul of brightness and that is the Defeat of Boredom.

Oh red!

LETTER FROM PAPA

LETTER FROM PAPA

Akùùdo m,

Ada ututu nge m, it was great hearing from you and if I must use your words, I believe that “the girl di strong, Hercules.” I rather go straight with today’s piece than worry about young people’s choice of words. By the way, Jisie ike n’ege Phyno.

Ada nna ya, the giant you fail to defeat today will become a bigger and stronger giant tomorrow. If you fail to treat a wound today, in the next few days, it becomes worse, more difficult to cure and costly too. That is an introduction to the “P” words, Postponement or Procrastination. The fertilizers of problems. The good news is that problems are looking for solutions and they come to you because you have the solutions. Learn not to react to them but respond to them. Yes! Handle it once.

Nwa m huru n’anya, don’t be like men who build castle on air. Yes, you have plans, work to achieve it. You have responsibilities, never dodge from them. Action speaks louder and better than words. You have what it takes. If you do not conquer any challenge when it is hard, it becomes difficult.

Be rest assured that God will not allow you to face any challenge that is beyond your capacity at any time. Even if you don’t have all that is required at that particular time, take your stand, as someone in charge and who is ready to make something happen. Then, you will see the positive outcome. Never Procrastinate!

Chukwu gozie gi, Ada m

Love

Papa
